After reading Wilfred Owen's poem Anthem for Doomed Youth in class, Y9 students were asked to create their own interpretations of an anthem for today's youth. Here are some student creations:
Anthem
for Today’s Youth by Krzys
Today’s
youth is quite different
Not the
worst generation
But not
quite diligent
In this
broken, destroyed world.
The planet
is falling
At an
alarming rate
What do you
feel?
Melancholy,
perhaps guilt
None of that
helps, we need action
But we’re
homebound
Quite unlike 1914.
Washing and cleaning before you go,
And
dressing up in the latest trend.
Ready to
go out into the snow,
Ready to
go out with your friends.
Nine o’clock on a Saturday evening,
Sat at the foot of a great tree leaning,
And all is going rather well.
But then you see him.
The one with a better coat and better
phone,
The one with a more favourable colour
of skin,
The one she speaks to in a warmer
tone,
And the one whose legs are more
attractively thin.
By now you know there’s no point in
staying,
And it’s better to leave the great
tree leaning.
Soldiers were always handed empty promises: They were promised they would be heroes; they were promised that if they died they would get the send off they deserved; they were promised a short war.
They were even convinced that the Germans were evil. But in reality, they were all in the same position: treated as if they were chess pieces being told where to go and what to do with no say in it - by people who weren’t even there. The real war wasn’t between the people of Germany and Britain the soldiers were simply just following orders. The real war was between the leaders of the countries and alliances which the citizens of either country had no say in. The people who were fighting and losing their lives were fighting for other people and promises that weren’t kept or acted upon. People were killed and mocked for being cowards when the real cowards were the ones sending soldiers to their doom for their own cause, many of these soldiers being young and having so much more to live for.
But what could the soldiers
do? They were simply chess pieces.
Anthem for the Youth
To the tune of can’t help falling in love by Elvis Presley.
Lyrics by Jas H – Y9
Brings all the hope,
That they will end global warming,
They will create,
Our rainbow of hope,
For they can end global warming.
Let’s all work together,
To change the world,
Cause climate change,
Needs to go,
Let’s join hands,
And hold life until we’re through,
Let’s
all work together,
To
change the world,
Cause
climate change,
Needs
to go,
Let’s
hold hands,
And
hold life until we’re through,
For
they will end global warming,
For they will end global warming.
Praise the Youth!
Praise the youth!
Give them the space and they will lead the way
Youth are respectful
Kind and warm
Praise the youth!
Youth do not complain they know how to work
And they know how to play
Praise the youth!
Youth overcome shyness and make friends quickly
They solve problems without ego
Praise the youth!
The future is bright thanks to the youth
Praise the youth!
