Marine Story by Milosz L - Year 7

A long time ago there was an infamous pirate crew. They called themselves The Pirates of the Knife’s Edge - their ship was conveniently called the “Knife’s Edge” - and it looked sharp. It was long and pointy in looks; it was nimble yet menacing with several cannons poking out of its sides.

One day the crew raided and sank a merchant ship then stole all the goods on board. One of these treasures was an odd coin with a picture of a Kraken on it and it emitted an eerie blue glow. It also sort of… murmured. One crew member (who was linguistically gifted) translated the mumbling. He said it said in Nori language “Return me to my home or suffer greatly…”.

That night the crew heard a blood-curdling scream from one of the dorms. Everyone jumped up, terrified, and looked towards the source of the scream and saw that one of the crew, a man called Fletcher whom nobody particularly liked, had disappeared in a puff of blue smoke. Needless to say, they were all a bit shaken up; however, everyone was chuffed to be rid of Fletcher. The captain, who was very popular with his men for being very clever, ordered to go to the Kraken’s Lagoon.

The Kraken’s Lagoon was a tropical island (with a lagoon obviously,) where many claimed to have seen a Kraken hence the spooky name… The captain thought that maybe if he gave the cursed coin to the Kraken then the crew could sleep properly at night, for the coin prevented them from doing so. If they ever did get to sleep then they would suffer horrific nightmares.

They were halfway there when, quite suddenly, the water beside them began to bubble and froth. Out of the water came the bow of a ship, the masts with remains of tattered souls on them. The ship looked oddly familiar. Many of the crew cried out as they realised it was the merchant ship they got the coin from! The ship called “The King’s Message”, still had the crew on board, but their faces were pale and sunken in looks. They were loading the mossy-seaweed strewn cannons! The captain ordered his crew to ready the cannons also, ready for the fight! The King’s Message fired and blew several holes in the Knife’s Edge’s side. Then, the captain ordered repeats to be executed and to open fire again. The King’s Message’s side was torn apart with a huge blow and it sank back into the sea.

The crew were shaken by this creepy encounter but sailed on all the same. When they reached the Kraken’s Lagoon, they found it quite peaceful and empty but then suddenly the water turned and bubbled again, and a huge tentacle reached up to the ship and pointed at the captain. Then it made a circle. The captain took this to mean it wanted the cursed coin and so he handed it over. The tentacle retracted to the sea with the coin, came up again without it and patted the captain’s head fondly. It then disappeared.

The curse had lifted, and everyone was safe again.
