#FilltheBox Challenge for National Writing Day 2021 - Year 7 Work

First Story’s annual celebration of creative writing is on 23 June, 2021.
Your voice is powerful. Use it on National Writing Day and beyond.

This National Writing Day writers are challenged to #FilltheBox with a piece of creative writing – a poem, a letter, a story – using the theme of connection. Whether it’s in 280 Twitter characters or on a post-it sized piece of paper, there’s a space to write for everyone.

Here are some examples from Year 7:

Grandma

I miss the way you let me style your hair,

even though it would look awful.

I miss the way you shouted at me for

making patterns on the stairs with cupcake cases

or when I would make a mess in the kitchen

whilst ‘helping’ you bake something sweet.

I miss when my parents would be annoyed with you

for spoiling me

with random things

I never needed.

Connection keeps you in contact.

Open your heart

Never be afraid,

Near me.

Enough is enough!

Can we refresh?

Time to connect.

By Imogen

Locked inside, feeling like I’m trapped in a cage.

Connecting with friends online wondering when I’ll see them again.

Talking to teachers behind a screen thinking ‘When will I be free?’

Seeing my friends from a distance again was the reason I smiled again.

Connecting with others online was never the same.

By Maya

Come to them to have fun

Online or face to face stuff

Never do the wrong

Never doubt yourself

Every day is fun with you

Cool things we do together

Time flies by with you.

 Believe in yourself.

By Xander

No matter where you are, be connected

No matter who you are, be connected

No matter what is happening, be connected

No matter:

Be connected.

Connecting can be hard,

Or it can be easy.

Never stop trying to find them.

Never give up,

Even when you feel like all is lost.

Coz when you find them,

The world will be whole again.

By Suraya

Closer than ever

Our friendship is thriving

Never giving up

Nothing can stop us

Every day we laugh and play

Coming when needed most

Thinking of each other

I’ll love you forever

Our hearts as one

Not caring what others think of us.

By Daisy

Connection: so distant,

Like being stranded on a desert island,

Alone where I stand.

I long to see a friend,

For the loneliness to end.

This lockdown, so harsh,

Like struggling through a marsh.

Connection: so far.

By Milosz

Some find it hard to connect; others find it easy. Whatever it is for you, you need to try. Even if you feel like giving up, get back and try again. You will find that person eventually, and when you do, all will be solved.

By Suraya

To feel disconnected isn’t the best feeling, especially if you’re going through a hard time.

So if you feel disconnected, making new connections, like making new friends, is the best feeling ever.

Have a great day. ðŸ˜Š

We all want to connect, but we don’t know what will happen next. We could get through this year with ease, or we could be teased.

Your tangled white fur

Your eyes we could never see

How I long to see you again

The toy squeaks no longer

Grabbing dust by the door

You stumbled along the garden

You weren’t doing well.

Blind and deaf, I still loved you.

I’ll see you in the next life.

Rest well, Max.

By Lily

Dear Shadow,

I know you are gone, but I miss you. I need you now. Mum and I want you back, even though we know you’re gone forever. It’s not the same with you gone. I think about you day and night. Don’t leave me alone.

By Ellie

Come

Online

Never be

Naughty to

Each other

Can

Time

Involve

Others

Niceness

By Mia

Closer together

Our bonds do grow

Never let them go

Never fear the night

Everlasting faith

Connects us all

To the righteous ones.

By Noman

Could we only hug again?

Only if I could see you again

Next time I will try not to cry

No-one will understand how much I miss you

Every day I think of you.

Comparing you, you were the best pony.

Two years without you now Murphy.

I promised to always keep you safe

One day I wish to see you again

No other horse will replace you.
