A piece of writing inspired by Wilfred Owen's poem 'Anthem for Doomed Youth'
Soldiers were always handed empty promises: They were promised they would be heroes; they were promised that if they died they would get the send off they deserved; they were promised a short war.
They were even convinced that the Germans were evil. But in reality, they were all in the same position: treated as if they were chess pieces being told where to go and what to do with no say in it - by people who weren’t even there. The real war wasn’t between the people of Germany and Britain the soldiers were simply just following orders. The real war was between the leaders of the countries and alliances which the citizens of either country had no say in. The people who were fighting and losing their lives were fighting for other people and promises that weren’t kept or acted upon. People were killed and mocked for being cowards when the real cowards were the ones sending soldiers to their doom for their own cause, many of these soldiers being young and having so much more to live for.
But what could the soldiers do? They were simply chess pieces.
