Anti Valentine's Poems

Taking inspiration from Carol Ann Duffy's poem 'Valentine', students wrote their own poignant and beautiful, or humorous and light-hearted poems. More poems from Years 8 & 9 to be found in 'Contents'.

You Used To…

You used to call me darling

Such a cheesy, cringy name

But I never cared when you did it

Because I called you just the same.

You used to send me chocolates,

snacks and sweets galore

From that moment on I knew

You were the one I’d adore.

But why, oh why did you end it?

Was I not the one for you?

You said goodbye and left

Looking for another to pursue.

You left me all alone

While you began anew

So now I’ve made this poem

So you know just what you blew.

You used to send me flowers

But now they’ve long since wilted.

We used to watch films together

On a cushion so nice and quilted.

You once gave me a teddy

But the dog’s ripped it apart -

It’s exactly what you did -

Except it was to my heart.

Roses are red

Violets are blue

I’d rather be single

Than be with someone like you :D

A Broken Heart

Not a heart-shaped chocolate or a diamond ring.

I give you a heart.

It is a broken heart.

It promises that there is no hope

like a glass half empty.

Here.

It will remind you that we now have nothing

like a cake that was once delicious but is now gone.

It will make your heart ache to remember the good times that you have ruined.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a beautiful flower or a love note.

I give you a broken heart.

Its last piece will stay with you forever,

relentless and unforgiving,

as we are not,

                                                                for ever more.

Take it.

It’s a symbol of our lost love

shrunk into a broken infinity ring,

if you like.

Shattered.

Its meaning will cling to your soul,

cling to your fragmented heart.

Trainers

We don’t want soppy cards or giant teddy bears,

We want trainers: Jordans, Air Forces, Air 270s,

It’s all we wish for.

We don’t need the expensive jewellery or fancy spa trips,

All we want is trainers, glistening white creps,

Red, blue, orange, pink, gold.

Just the thought of them makes us excited.

We don’t need a bunch of roses which last for one day,

We want custom made sneakers.

Any, please.
