Empowered

In Creative Writing Club we discussed the meaning of the word 'empowerment' before sharing ideas about how we could empower ourselves, and how we could empower others. We then watched and listened to two poets delivering their poems about empowerment.

Here are some examples of students' work:

A Poem about Empowerment

By Niamh W – Y7

Hello people!

Well, how to start?

There’s so much to say,

I could pour out my heart.

I see you here now,

Standing before me.

Hope in your eyes,

Each telling a story.

I don’t know why you’re here,

Or the motives for your actions.

Maybe you need a friend?

Or some easy distractions?

Being young in this time,

Is not an easy task.

Consciences are easily clouded,

Faces covered by a mask.

I've learnt to be spontaneous,

Like any day could be our last.

When you’re raised in this world,

There’s a lot you can’t look past.

News articles and programmes,

Set on ruining your day.

But I just can’t scroll past.

It's like I can’t look away!

Tragic accidents,

And people dying.

Natural disasters,

All things worth crying.

How did we get to this point?

Where was the save button?

You must think these things often.

It happens all of a sudden.

When you realise,

Life isn’t so simple.

It's not like in our stories.

Everything has a ripple!

But let me tell you all,

How to look ahead,

How to glance past,

All the horrible things said.

You should never simply forget,

These things don’t just disappear,

But maybe focus less,

On the bad stuff you hear.

Even when doing an easy job,

Just ask yourself this,

Is it causing a bad ripple?

Is this something to miss?

Or when you’re scared to do something,

Or speak to a specific person,

Just remember what I said,

After all, your days could only worsen.

Don't let your fears guide your every move,

Nothing good can come of that.

Let yourself do what’s best for you,

Your anxiety is what you should combat!

So before I leave you all,

On this – hopefully – inspiring note,

I want to wish you well,

And hope you stay afloat.

In this vast ocean of moving life,

We are all stranded at sea,

Let's find an island together,

The opportunities are free!

Don’t be held back,

Make a bold move,

And always try your hardest,

You've got a lot to prove!

Your All by Amelia Mc – Y8

There are times, when perhaps,

You don’t give things your all

Because you’re afraid

That maybe you’ll fall.

You feel like you’ll just

Fall down, down, down.

But you’ll never fall,

if you don’t leave the ground.

But if you’re on solid ground,

Then you’ll never rise.

So why stay on the ground,

When you could be up in the skies?

So, aim for the moon,

With all of your heart,

Because even if you miss,

You’ll land amongst the stars.

So, remember,

Stay strong, stand proud, stand tall,

And always give everything -

Your absolute all.
